I am the author of four novels: Sister, Why the Tree Loves the Ax, The King is Dead, and Ghosts of New York. Together, they have been translated into 7 languages. Each of the last two was voted a Notable Book of the Year by the New York Times.
In addition to my fiction, I’ve published two books in collaboration with the artists Jack Pierson and Cecily Brown, and written or contributed to more than 30 museum and gallery monographs, including books for The Whitney Museum of American Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
I have also written over 250 essays, profiles, and reportage for dozens of magazines, including The New York Times Magazine, and their Book Review, Granta, Alta, Tin House, the Yale Review, Texas Monthly, GQ, Wired, and Slate. I’ve covered wars and riots, prisons, refugee camps, and disaster zones, as well as travel and technology, perfumes and Fabergé eggs, ballet and books of poetry.
